What Is an ICP?
ICP stands for “Injection Control Pressure.” It’s an analog pressure sensor that serves a critical role in diesel engines. The ICP interprets injection pressure in your engine and compares that data to the load the driver is placing on the engine to ensure that enough fuel is being injected into the cylinders.
Load is a term that describes how much work the engine is expected to perform at a given time. Load increases or decreases, according to road conditions, cargo weight, and your driving style. Bad road conditions, towing heavy trailers, and aggressive driving all increase load and the engine’s need for more fuel.
If fuel injection is not correctly matched to load, you can experience light loading or insufficient power output. Light loading occurs when too much fuel is injected into the system, and it is undesirable because it can create complications that undermine the long-term efficiency of your engine.
It also encourages carbon buildup and, in extreme circumstances, it can lead to early engine failure. When insufficient fuel is injected into the system, you can expect to experience diminished performance—and those hills you once conquered may start to look like mountains.
How Does an ICP Sensor Work?
Drivers love diesels because they are designed with amazing modern technology. As cutting-edge as your new Powerstroke system may be, the ICP is an unbelievably simple system. The ICP itself is just an analog pressure sensor that monitors driving patterns and injection pressure, and it calculates load requirements. Once it determines pressure requirements, a signal is sent to the fuel injection system to make sure enough fuel is being introduced into the cylinders.
Because diesel engines lack spark plugs and, instead rely on a precise ignition pressure and fuel-air mixture to produce power, a failing or poorly calibrated ICP can have a tremendous impact on your truck’s overall performance.
